Great idea Zachary,
One of the best things we can do is keep materials in use for as long as possible, so going down the reuse path makes the most sense to me. With that in mind I'd be looking at stainless steel and glass as they a food safe materials and can be recycled indefinitely without losing quality at end of life.
Hi Zachary, Yes! Finally someone looking to solve this, thank you! Liam Gibson is the guru on all things 'circular materials' and I'm so glad he beat me to commenting today on Day 1 of the UpRising challenge. Go Liam! I'm the founder of Circular Economy Pioneers and am also involved with Planet Ark Environmental Foundation's Australian Circular Economy Hub (ACE Hub). There are many reuse, circular design and packaging specialists in Australia's circular economy community so please feel free to send me an email with any specific questions or challenges you need help with as you develop your project. My email is chelsea@circulareconomypioneers.com.au
@Liam Gibson
Thank you so much for the response, it has helped me set a strong direction for researching and prototyping! I find that those materials would work perfectly being a household and would likely be a one-time buy, cutting expenses. I will continue to update you on the progress and evolution through commenting and description!
This is a great idea Zachary, Polypropylene is a food-grade sturdy plastic that is recyclable (milk bottles.) This would mean you can get multiple uses out of the device before it fails, and then recycle the materials afterwards.
Looking at the problem from another direction could be using biodegradable or compostable materials, such as plant-based plastics or biodegradable polymers. These materials break down naturally over time, reducing the environmental impact of the water filter waste.
Hi Zachary, how are you going with your prototype? I would love to know what materials you decided to use and could pass your questions/updates on to Liam Gibson too if you like. We're keen to help you and also to share your progress with Australia's circular economy community! Warm regards, Chelsea
Hi Chelsea McLean, thank you for seeking an update on my prototyping. So far I've gone through five phases of designs to get a final product which is new post image on shown in fusion. I’ve settled on glass as my final material but due to limited resources I will continue with the PLA as a way to show proof of concept as it will still be fully functional! I have some more information I was hoping I could share as with your expertise all things sustainable I would love to have professional eye review my idea. If email is best I may send something shortly but I will add to uprising tomorrow with more detail on my MDP on the biography or comments, as it will help in displaying my motivation and aspirations as a designer. I would love to credit you and Liam of Circular Economy Pioneer in my folio and design for the immense amount of help offered. Thanks so much and I'll add/send through something very tomorrow!
Good morning UpRising. Congratulations on the development of your project. As one of this year's UpRising students, you have been invited to

Teachers are most welcome to the event as well.
Congratulations Zachary on your fantastic efforts with your MDP, it has been great to be part of your design journey this year.
Good luck with the submission of your project and adding any finishing touches this week, I am sure you will do great. We hope that you have learned a lot from being part of this year's UpRising and are excited to take your creativity and design thinking into the next steps in life, (which is exactly what business and industry are looking for.) Teachers, thank you for helping your students make the leap across the gap, from classroom to industry.
Business leaders, likewise it has been fantastic to connect with you, thank you for all of the support you have given to these young designers and helping to grow the innovation ecosystem in NSW. Breaking down the silos, together.
If you could complete this quick survey that would be greatly appreciated, teachers and business/community also welcome to fill in and provide valuable feedback.
