Motorcycle Visibility Backpack

post-image

My MDP is a hard shelled backpack, with lights attached for visibility of the rider. Lack of visibility to other drivers is the most common cause of a motorcycle accident. My MDP will feature the lights for visibility, a mesh back cover to reduce sweat and increase comfort, an inertia brake light system for extra rider safety, and a hard outer shell to protect what is inside.

It would be appreciated to get any feedback on the idea and any tips on making the actual backpack.

What do you think?

Fantastic idea Marcus. So many applications for this. What are the primary materials that you are using to make it?

Have you thought about using a fluorescent material for the backpack that conforms to the AS/NZS 1906.4:2010 standards for retroreflective materials and devices used in road traffic control? Doing so may increase the wearer's visibility during daylight hours. Additionally, incorporating reflective material could further enhance the wearer's visibility in low-light conditions where the lights aren't on because of something like a flat battery.

Hi Marcus,

I love your idea! One thing I would like to add is that if riders have an accident, it is possible that a hard shell may cause damage to the rider if it hits their ribs or other body parts. If you could perhaps make it brittle enough to break on impact without having sharp edges this could help this. The hard shell may cause more harm than good. Also, the inertia break light is a very creative idea! If this could be perfected it would be good but currently they do not work consistently. Maybe there could be something to bluetooth to the actual bike lights? This would mean they go at exactly the same time.

Just a few ideas, good luck!

Rylee

Hey Joel, I had thought about using fluorescent materials for my project, however, traditionally a lot of motorbike riders don't want to wear those sorts of high visibility items that could help them be more visible. On the other hand, I will definitely be adding in some parts of reflective materials so that it will always be able to give some amount of visibility, I was thinking to use reflective stitching but if you had any other ideas I'd love to hear them.

Hi Rylee, thanks for the ideas. I will have to do some more testing in the future but I think that it should be ok not to hurt the rider because I will have an extra strap somewhere on the front so that it will always stay in the same position when it is on so then if you fall off theres no risk of it moving around and hitting other body parts. I hadn't considered that with the inertia break light but I will definitely see if there is some way I can work it out and the bluetooth idea could definitely be a good addition.

Thanks, Marcus.

Great Idea, Can't wait to see how it goes. I'm interested to see how safe it will be, being a hardshell and if the rider did crash, would it cause more damage or less? Maybe a crumpling feature would be a good idea for a 'softer' landing.

Hi Marcus,

Interesting idea.

Kind regards,

Joe

Good morning UpRising. Congratulations on the development of your project. As one of this year's UpRising students, you have been invited to

UpRising @ Stone&Chalk - Program X - Tickets are open now.

Click here to get your ticket. https://events.humanitix.com/uprising-stone-and-chalk

Our big event for this year, UpRising@Stone&Chalk, July 14th Friday 10am to 2pm, and you get first dibs. This will be in the second week of the school holidays. It doesn't mess up your school time and makes it as easy as possible for you to get there. In a cool building, in an amazing place, in the heart of innovation in NSW.

There is a limit of 50 attendees, with the first invitations going to you, the UpRising students of 2023. If there are any spaces left by the end of this week, we will create a second round of invitations that you can pass onto a classmate from your design class. Please complete this survey if you haven't already to help us know exactly what you want to get from this opportunity. Teachers are most welcome to the event as well.

Congratulations Marcus on your fantastic efforts with your MDP, it has been great to be part of your design journey this year.

It would be fantastic if you could share an image of your final design. If you get a chance to drop one in as an update of your post, that would be awesome. Good luck with the submission of your project and adding any finishing touches this week, I am sure you will do great.

We hope that you have learned a lot from being part of this year's UpRising and are excited to take your creativity and design thinking into the next steps in life, (which is exactly what business and industry are looking for.) Teachers, thank you for helping your students make the leap across the gap, from classroom to industry.

Business leaders, likewise it has been fantastic to connect with you, thank you for all of the support you have given to these young designers and helping to grow the innovation ecosystem in NSW. Breaking down the silos, together.

If you could complete this quick survey that would be greatly appreciated, teachers and business/community also welcome to fill in and provide valuable feedback.

Thank you
