Learning Pod

post-image

I am exploring the idea of how students with disabilities can be included in mainstream classrooms by changing from a ‘fix the child’ approach to ‘fix’ the environment.

The incidence of diverse learners in Australia’s mainstream schools is growing and with the findings of the Disability Royal Commission, changes need to be made in schools.

My plan for my MDP is to Design an individualised learning pod to cater and support students with learning disabilities in a mainstream classroom.

Any advice on important features or ideas to include in this learning pod would be appreciated!

What do you think?

Brilliant idea Meg. Would love to see people consider all students as diverse learners. Dismantling the stigma and breaking the idea of a 'normal' classroom student is so important.

Can you share some of your key direction points? Are you trying to increase concentration by reducing noise distractions, or light stimulation, peripheral visual distractions?

Lots of great applications for something like this.

Looking forward to seeing your project come together.

Thanks for your input!

One of the main aspects of my project is inclusivity, having a safe space in the classroom without having to be isolated or removed while having the support of features like soundproofing, adjustable lighting to fit the individual, colour therapy and options for padding for students that stim or for general comfort.

I am also currently researching some innovative lighting solutions that promote the brain’s ability to focus and learn like human-centric lighting.

Hello Meg

This idea from a student last year may be helpful https://ideaspies.com/posts/safe-space-for-autism

This is a great idea Meg! Have you taken a look at some of the projects coming out of the UNSW Assistive Tech Hub? https://www.challeng.unsw.edu.au/assistive-tech-hub. They might be of interest to you, and here is a link on assistive technologies that might also be useful https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-and-learning/disability-learning-and-support/resources/assistive-technology

I think that the base philosophy behind the Learning Pod is sound, to fix the environment rather than thinking you have to fix the child. However, I have some concerns regarding the physical aspects of the Pod. Particularly, how would the Pod go about having non-combative lighting applied, and how would the student engage with the class work? Is there supposed to be a see-through screen on the front of the Pod, or do they receive the work handout in the Pod? Presumably the image used is just a reference photo used to convey a general idea about the Pod, but what if the student suffers from claustrophobia? It is admirable to want to design a unique Pod for every individual student's individual needs, but I don't see how it's feasible, unless you wanted to make a base version of the Pod that could have additional inclusions purchased separately to make the Pod more unique to the student.

But, I don't think you should let these questions get in your way. There's never something wrong with wanting to help people.

Great idea Meg,

In regards to social practicality, could this pose as a significant distraction as students enter the classroom as I'm considering whether kids that don't want to learn and work in the classroom may fight for these pods at the beginning of classes to hide away and do anything but work in class while those students that these pods are intended for continue to have to partake in regular class at a desk. Should these pods only be available in certain classes like homeroom, how many, etc.

Thank you for trying to think of a solution for this problem.

Good morning UpRising. Congratulations on the development of your project. As one of this year's UpRising students, you have been invited to

UpRising @ Stone&Chalk - Program X - Tickets are open now.

Click here to get your ticket. https://events.humanitix.com/uprising-stone-and-chalk

Our big event for this year, UpRising@Stone&Chalk, July 14th Friday 10am to 2pm, and you get first dibs. This will be in the second week of the school holidays. It doesn't mess up your school time and makes it as easy as possible for you to get there. In a cool building, in an amazing place, in the heart of innovation in NSW.

There is a limit of 50 attendees, with the first invitations going to you, the UpRising students of 2023. If there are any spaces left by the end of this week, we will create a second round of invitations that you can pass onto a classmate from your design class. Please complete this survey if you haven't already to help us know exactly what you want to get from this opportunity. Teachers are most welcome to the event as well.

Congratulations Meg on your fantastic efforts with your MDP, it has been great to be part of your design journey this year.

Good luck with the submission of your project and adding any finishing touches this week, I am sure you will do great. We hope that you have learned a lot from being part of this year's UpRising and are excited to take your creativity and design thinking into the next steps in life, (which is exactly what business and industry are looking for.) Teachers, thank you for helping your students make the leap across the gap, from classroom to industry.

Business leaders, likewise it has been fantastic to connect with you, thank you for all of the support you have given to these young designers and helping to grow the innovation ecosystem in NSW. Breaking down the silos, together.

If you could complete this quick survey that would be greatly appreciated, teachers and business/community also welcome to fill in and provide valuable feedback.

Thank you.
