App to aid in locating rubbish bins

post-image

Litter is wide spread throughout our landscape and is causing huge damage to our environment and infrastructure by polluting out water ways and harming wildlife.

To solve this issue I aim to make an application where users can locate rubbish bins around them from a map. From they app they can also report illegal dumping.

I would like feed back on my app interface. (The image above is an initial sketch)

Thanks!

What do you think?

This is a great idea. You could incorporate different colour bin icons depending on whether they have recycling or not. E.g. red for landfill, green for recycling. It would also be good to see the location of container collection facilities like containers for change.

I think that is a great idea! I will implement that into my prototypes. Thanks!

This sounds like a good idea to combat urban littering.

In terms of social adoption, would the people who download this app like be those that wouldn't litter anyway? And would there be a way to encourage more of the population to use the app?

Who would the illegal dumping reports be sent to and how would that be incorporated into the app? It would be great to see a notification system on days like 'Clean up Australia day' where it tells you where the closest bin is and encourages users to pick up rubbish that they see on the ground.

To encourage more of the population to use the app it would need to be advertised and marketed, it could probably be advertised along side different littering campaigns. The reports are sent to the EPA website as they have a website to handle illegal dumping. I think the notification system is a great idea that I will consider implementing. Thanks!

For this to be a viable app, you would need to consider the use of a registry and someone to update it. If this is a requirement of the government or property owner, this may result in more effort being expended maintaining the registry than what would have been expended by providing more bins.
This could be developed with an approach that makes it more preferable for the bin-owners, such as a publicly operated reporting system that notes whether the bins need to be emptied or not.

Also, I'll note that currently there is a similar app that already provides the user with the ability to report illegal dumping quickly - Snap Send Solve.

This project, although simplistic in nature, may offer a unique contribution to reducing global pollution, great idea! I have observed several areas that I believe could further the project's scope and success.

I feel the app may be too simplistic and not give users much incentive to download or continue to use the application once they have identified all the rubbish bins in their local area. This may be combated by providing an opportunity to not only look after the environment but also improve people's quality of life and physical health at the same time. This could be done by providing locations such as parks or nature trails on the map and encouraging community members to visit them. Beyond that, the map could be used to provide public posts to locations that would allow for identifying areas with high levels of litter. This, coupled with the addition of direct communication amongst users within the app, could directly translate to organising clean up or other community events. Additionally, creating an application that allows for interactions between members would allow for praise and encouragement which has been proven to have a direct impact on performance and effort.

This comment has strayed quite a long way away from your initial idea and might not be at all what you’re thinking of going with. That’s perfectly fine, just thought I’d share my thoughts. Again, great idea and good luck with it!!

I really like the idea to have a feature to that allow people to easily organise clean up groups!

UpRising @ 2023.06.06 2:07 AM

Good morning UpRising. Congratulations on the development of your project. As one of this year's UpRising students, you have been invited to

UpRising @ Stone&Chalk - Program X - Tickets are open now.

Click here to get your ticket. https://events.humanitix.com/uprising-stone-and-chalk

Our big event for this year, UpRising@Stone&Chalk, July 14th Friday 10am to 2pm, and you get first dibs. This will be in the second week of the school holidays. It doesn't mess up your school time and makes it as easy as possible for you to get there. In a cool building, in an amazing place, in the heart of innovation in NSW.

There is a limit of 50 attendees, with the first invitations going to you, the UpRising students of 2023. If there are any spaces left by the end of this week, we will create a second round of invitations that you can pass onto a classmate from your design class. Please complete this survey if you haven't already to help us know exactly what you want to get from this opportunity. Teachers are most welcome to the event as well.

Congratulations Risa on your fantastic efforts with your MDP, it has been great to be part of your design journey this year.

It would be fantastic if you could share an image of your final design. If you get a chance to drop one in as an update of your post, that would be awesome. Good luck with the submission of your project and adding any finishing touches this week, I am sure you will do great.

We hope that you have learned a lot from being part of this year's UpRising and are excited to take your creativity and design thinking into the next steps in life, (which is exactly what business and industry are looking for.) Teachers, thank you for helping your students make the leap across the gap, from classroom to industry.

Business leaders, likewise it has been fantastic to connect with you, thank you for all of the support you have given to these young designers and helping to grow the innovation ecosystem in NSW. Breaking down the silos, together.

If you could complete this quick survey that would be greatly appreciated, teachers and business/community also welcome to fill in and provide valuable feedback.

Thank you
